PS: Keith: If you don't let this whole crash thing go, I will schedule a
full scale family intervention where we make you bunny hop barriers in the mud
until you let go of the past...

After Natz, I left for a week of snowboarding and then visiting with family, that is, not a second thinking about the bike, worrying about what I eat (or drink), or getting enough rest. And I think it showed. I unpacked my bikes Sunday morning, only brought one, forgot my shoes, wished and washed about even racing, and ate a donut waiting for the start. Let's ride, er, I mean race!
After my lap and a half of glory, reality settled in that I was super-slow, and unmotivated to push it hard. Actually, I was still thinking about snowboarding: surfing across fresh powder, finding hits in the trees, a good ride. Well, the race turned into just that: having fun 100% of the time, hit jumps and bunny hop everything. The only barrier I didn't get over was the one right before the finish line. The one out on the road was tricky, and I only attempted it once.
I don't know who turned "the hill" into a ride up, you sick, bad person. Of course, I HAD to make it, at any cost. The race was out of the window anyway, and the combination of crowds and beer handups work magic on your concept of what is reasonable. As a result, I got lapped, which has never happened to me before, but on the final attempt of the hill, well, you saw. Vindication for being a putz! That made being sloppy wet and cold worth it.
I wanted to thank all the CCCX staff, promoters and racers for a good season, it was tons of fun, and I can wait until next year because it's right around the corner. Congratulations to Jackson Stewart for the series win; welcome to the big leagues and good luck in Belgium.

THINK "JEDI MASTERS"
By Mark Howland
Master Men 35+ Race
Wanted to thank all the boys that made this season a great success. I look
around at what masters cross racing has become in NorCal (think Jedi
Masters, not old and slow), and really appreciate what we have here in our
own back yard. This last race was a great way to finish a season. I think,
as always, the racing in our group took another jump up a notch this year,
and guys like Pat Schott (Blackmarket Racing -shameless promo here), Chris
D., Rich M., Oz (Alan C.), and Keith D. made that fact even more so. I think
we get some pretty fierce rivalries going out there, but the bottom line is
that without each other, we wouldn't get pushed to go so fast. In other
words, we owe it to each other to kick the shit out of each other. Anything
less would bring our level of racing down. Thanks to the CCCX gang for
putting on a class act all season!! And a special thanks to all my sponsors
for making it happen for me when I needed it.

I LOVE PAIN
By Joseph Fortino
Category B Men Race
I would like to first start off saying that I had a great time doing this
series :) Great music at the start of the B's
and a nice size feild ( small ) I lined up near the back and just wanted to
pedel and test myself after a rest week,
seems 6 days without riding jumping into a cyclocross race hurts the legs,
but hell I love pain fine line of love and hate
(anyway) I started with the group and just tried to hold a good line with
all the first lap crazy lines plus just wanted to make it
threw the race without getting hacked seems I'm a great person to have turns
with ;-P but I love good fun and staying
true to what I need to work on, and this race was just another time for me
to get this cyclocross thing down!! My run
ups were crap and my dismounts need work, FUN course and PLUS I got a cool
water bottle. * stoked * I came home
and told my wife I won it.. LOL

I CAN
By Ben Jacques-Maynes
Category A Men Race
As anyone who was at the last CCCX event can tell, I'm burnt!! This season, while not as long as last year, has been more taxing on me, my equipment, my checkbook, everything. We saw some great mud in the late season (and some hellish mud too...), some great races, and the next level move up in the ranks. I am very happy about this season, and am just as glad it's over.
I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL NEXT SEASON!

Master 35+ Race
After finally getting rid of some nagging back and leg pains I thought
I'd try a CCCX race. The last one of the year seemed good, double points,
mud and less racers after X-mas. Well...45 min. plus one lap is much longer
than 30!!! Ouch.... Actually the course was great, not too much running and
lots of places to pass or get passed.
As I made my way to the start it began to rain. Not heavy, and nothing
like the 40 days & 40 nites of the Surf City finals. I watched the fast
guys; Alan, Chris, Mark, Larry, Pat and others rip up the hill as I plodded
along at a comfortable pace (puff, wheeze). The rain really softened up the
course and my tires began slipping and sliding, but I was having fun! The
downhill by the finish line was great and I blasted down each lap until I
slammed something and my bars slipped. So I now had a low-rider position.
I pushed on and was really having a great time. I only got lapped twice by
the big boyz, much better than the three or four times like last year.
Those intervals did help. It was so cool to watch them hop the barriers on
the back side! I had some great dices with guys at the back and really
enjoyed the muck. Even though it was raining steadily the whole time there
were so many people hanging out and cheering, 'cross is great. I especially
want to thank Antonio Diaz, my Seaside 'cross buddy- 8th in Cs, for feeds
and his encouragement. I can't wait until next season!!!!
Jody Hutchinson, back o' the bunch.
